A Lactation & IYCF Professional’s Guide to How Often & How Much to Feed
One of the most common questions I receive from new parents is:
“How many meals should my baby eat?”
“What is the right quantity?”
“How do I balance breastmilk and solids?”
As a PharmD, Lactation Professional & IYCF expert, I want to reassure you:
There is no rigid ‘perfect schedule.’
There is only a rhythm that supports your baby’s natural hunger and developmental needs.
This guide helps you understand what, when, and how much your baby needs from 6 to 12 months, based on WHO–UNICEF–BPNI recommendations.
🌼 Before You Start: Important Principles
✔ Breastmilk (or formula) remains the MAIN food until 1 year
✔ Solids complement milk, not replace it
✔ Feed responsively never force-feed
✔ Follow baby’s cues (open mouth, turning away, pushing spoon, excitement)
✔ Offer a variety of textures and tastes
✔ Your goal: 3 meals by 9 months + snacks by 1 year
Now let’s break it down month-by-month.
🍼 Feeding Schedule for 6–8 Months
Breastmilk/Formula:
6–8 feeds per day (breastfeeding on demand)
Solids:
1–2 meals per day in the first week, then 2–3 meals by end of month.
Quantity (per meal):
- Start with: 1–2 teaspoons
- Week 2: 2–3 tablespoons
- Week 3–4: ¼ cup to ½ cup
Sample Daily Schedule (6–8 Months)
This is just an example adjust based on your baby’s cues.
